People need to be motivated to get online. The best way to do this is by showing them how the internet can benefit them. We call this ‘finding the hook’ – the interest that will engage them and help them see the upside of the internet.
That motivation, or hook, will look different for each person and depend on what they’re looking to do. It could be supporting their hobbies, managing their finances, accessing key services or connecting with friends.
The best way to learn what is going to motivate the person you are supporting is to listen. If someone has never used the internet before they may not fully appreciate the range of different things you can do online. Thinking about how you can translate their interests into digital activity is the best place to begin. Start with something fun.
If you’ve explored the interests of the person you are supporting to find a hook and they’re still not interested, that’s fine. We shouldn’t push people online if they don’t want to be. Digital inclusion is about ensuring everyone who wants to be online can be, and respecting the decision for people who choose not to be.
In this short video, Dawn from Blackwood Homes and Care talks about their 'Peoplehood' project and how digital benefits their tenants.
